Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a child, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford's interest in acting began when she was young. She was a part of at the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she concluded that this school wasn't right for her. Ford then applied for a place for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of Ford's classmates. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1990. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in 1991and appeared on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually joining in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedy, that were added to her show in the year 1996.
